What’s Tabata Workout?

Tabata is a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata and his research team at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo.

The structure is brutally simple: 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for 8 rounds — just 4 minutes total.

Originally tested on Olympic speed skaters, the results were groundbreaking: athletes improved both aerobic and anaerobic capacity faster than with traditional steady-state cardio.

It quickly spread beyond the lab, becoming a go-to format for anyone chasing maximum results in minimum time — from athletes to busy professionals.

Fun fact:

The original study used stationary bike sprints at nearly 170% of VO₂ max — meaning the athletes were working beyond their maximum oxygen

Tabata Workout Example:

4-Minute Full Body Tabata

Each round:

20 sec Jump Squats

10 sec Rest

20 sec Push-Ups

10 sec Rest

20 sec Mountain Climbers

10 sec Rest

20 sec Sit-Ups

10 sec Rest

Repeat for 2 total cycles (8 rounds total – 4 minutes).

The key is to go all out during the 20-second work periods and fully recover during the 10-second rest.

It’s only four minutes, but if you give 100%, that’s more than enough to feel it.
